5 Tips to Grow Your Small Business (Without a Big Budget)

If you make soap, candles, jewellery, skincare or anything else by hand, you already know the hard part isn't making the product. It's getting it noticed, and getting people to come back. Growth rarely comes from one big move. It's a handful of small habits that stack up. Here are five that cost little and suit handmade businesses especially well.

1Be specific about who your products are for

"Handmade soap for everyone" is hard to remember and easy to scroll past. People are drawn to products that feel made for them.

Think about how different these sound:

  • Soap for sensitive skin, with a short ingredient list you can read at a glance.
  • Candles for cosy nights in, in calm, natural scents.
  • Minimalist jewellery for everyday wear and thoughtful gifts.

Pick one group of people and talk to them directly in your photos, your product names and your descriptions. It makes every other decision easier: what to make next, which markets to sell at, what to say on your packaging.

A quick exercise: finish this sentence. "I make ___ for people who ___." If you can't, narrow it down until you can.

2Let your packaging do your marketing

Your packaging is the one piece of marketing every customer holds in their hands. For handmade products it matters even more, because people can't compare quality on a screen. They judge by how it feels when it arrives.

A few ways to stand out:

  • Be recognisable. Use the same colours, fonts and style on your soap wraps, candle sleeves, jewellery cards and boxes, so everything looks like it belongs together.
  • Make unboxing a moment. Tissue paper, a belly band, a ribbon or a hand-written note turns a delivery into a gift.
  • Personalise it. A name on the tag or a short note makes someone feel it was made for them, which is exactly why they bought handmade.
  • Match the product. A calm, natural soap deserves calm, natural packaging. A luxury candle calls for something sleeker.

This is exactly what we're building Pack&Pattern for. You pick a format (soap wrap, belly band, candle sleeve, jewellery backing card, hand tag, gift bag or box) and a look, personalise it with a name or message, and get a print-ready file with the folds and bleed already handled, so premium packaging doesn't need a premium budget.

3Reward your regulars

Winning a new customer takes effort. A customer who already loves your lavender bar or your sandalwood candle is far easier to keep, and repeat buyers are usually the backbone of a handmade business.

A loyalty scheme doesn't need an app. A simple stamp card works well: buy a few times, get a small thank-you.

  • Soap and skincare: a free mini bar after five orders.
  • Candles: a discount on a refill or a new scent after a set number of purchases.
  • Jewellery: a small gift or early access to new pieces for returning customers.

Keep the reward simple and clear, make the card something people want to keep so it looks as good as your product, and mention it in every parcel.

Printed loyalty cards are one of the formats on our list for Pack&Pattern, designed in the same look as your other packaging so they feel part of the brand.

4Plan around the gifting seasons

Handmade products make wonderful gifts, and customers buy far more around gifting moments: Christmas, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Easter, Halloween and birthdays. Makers who plan ahead can ride that demand instead of scrambling.

  • Build gift sets. A soap trio, a candle and matches, or a necklace with a matching card are easy to price higher than the single item.
  • Package for the moment. A seasonal sleeve, tag or wrap makes the same product feel new and giftable.
  • Plan early. Decide your seasonal range weeks ahead, so you aren't designing packaging during the busiest week.
  • Create urgency honestly. A limited run or a clear last-order date helps people decide.

Seasonal looks (Christmas, Halloween, Valentine's and Easter, for example) are part of our plan for Pack&Pattern, so you can re-theme the same product without redesigning from scratch.

5Turn customers into your marketing team

For a handmade business, a happy customer's word is worth more than any ad. You can make it easy for them to say it.

  • Ask at the right moment. A thank-you card in the parcel with a short, friendly request for a review or photo beats a follow-up email people ignore.
  • Make it effortless. A QR code or short link on the card takes people straight to where you want the review.
  • Share what they share. Repost customer photos (with permission) so new buyers see real people using your soap, candles or jewellery.
  • Say thank you properly. A hand-written line or their name on the card builds loyalty.

Thank-you cards and inserts are another format we're designing Pack&Pattern to make, so every order can carry a personal note.

Putting it into practice

Pick one tip this week. If you're short on time, start with packaging, because it reaches every customer on every order. Small, consistent improvements beat big, occasional pushes.

These tips are general business advice, not guarantees. Results vary by product, market and effort.
