How to print soap belly bands at home (sizes, paper and bleed)

A belly band is a strip of paper that wraps around a bar of soap. It's one of the cheapest ways to make handmade soap look like a finished product, and you can make your own at home. Here's how to get it right the first time.

1Measure your bar, not the template

Many ready-made templates come in a few set sizes, such as 7 x 2, 8 x 2 and 9 x 2 inches. Your bar might sit between sizes, so measure it yourself:

  • Wrap a piece of string around the bar the way the band will sit.
  • Mark where it overlaps, then lay it flat and measure.
  • Add about 10-15 mm for the overlap tab where the band is glued.

That length is your band length. The width is whatever looks good, commonly 30-60 mm on a standard bar.

2Add bleed and a safe zone

Always extend your background about 3 mm (1/8 inch) past the cut line on every edge. Keep text and logos about 3 mm inside the cut line. This stops white edges and clipped text if your cutting is slightly off.

If you design in Canva, make sure backgrounds actually extend into the bleed area. Turning bleed on in the settings isn't enough on its own.

3Pick the right paper

For belly bands, a matte or satin paper of roughly 120-170 gsm is a good starting point. It's stiff enough to hold its shape and thin enough to wrap neatly. Heavier card is harder to wrap and can crack at the edges. These are typical guidelines, so check your printer's maximum paper weight and test one sheet first.

4Print a test

  • Print one copy on plain paper at 100% / actual size.
  • Wrap it round a bar. Does it fit? Does the overlap look right?
  • Adjust, then print on your good paper.

5Cut and finish

  • Use a ruler and craft knife, or a paper trimmer, for straight edges.
  • Wrap the band round the bar and fix the overlap with a small dab of glue or a sticker.
  • If the soap is oily or damp, a layer of waxed or greaseproof paper under the band keeps it clean.

A note on cost

Printing your own makes the most sense for small runs, many designs, seasonal ranges and personalised bands (for example, a name on each). If you sell hundreds of identical bands, a professional print run may work out cheaper per piece once you count your own time.
